Did You Know?

Welcome to the Shortest Day of the Year!
   Solstice means...standing-still-sun

The astronomical scoop:
The Earth is actually nearer the sun in January than it is in June -- by three million miles. But what causes the seasons is something completely different. The Earth leans slightly on its axis like a spinning top frozen in one off-kilter position.

Astronomers have even pinpointed the precise angle of the tilt. It's 23 degrees and 27 minutes off the perpendicular to the plane of orbit. This planetary pose is what causes all the variety of our climate; all the drama and poetry of our seasons, since it determines how many hours and minutes each hemisphere receives precious sunlight.

The winter solstice is the shortest day of the year in the sense that the length of time elapsed between sunrise and sunset on this day is a minimum for the year.

So we are welcoming the RETURN of the SUN.  Sweet.

Meta's Message

"It is in the shelter of each other that the people live."
Irish Proverb

The days get longer and the new year approaches.  We often use this time to reflect on how things have gone in the past year and our hopes for the new year.  Sometimes we even make resolutions for our best selves for the new year.  Sometimes we feel defeated before we start because of past years failed resolutions.  Ah, but take heart!

With yoga, each moment is a potential new year, each day a day for an intention to our highest selves.  We can make an intention now for the rest of the day or for the next five minutes.  Intentions take us inward and are always available, including on December 31st.

If you know of someone who has an intention (or even a resolution) to try yoga next year, you might let them know about the free intro class Saturday, December 31st at 1 pm at YogaNow Mountain Run…a chance to start the year with yoga.

My intention is to serve you through teaching yoga and creating a safe and welcoming environment to practice yoga in community.

Thank you for allowing me the joy of teaching and keeping YogaNow humming with so many gifted and inspired teachers…we - Angie, Barbara, Betheyla, Cheri, Jimmy, Lisa, Michael, Omkara, Pamela, Susana & Tejal – send our heartiest wishes for a sweet celebration of sun!

In peace,
With smiles for a fabuloso New Year,

Meta.

(Namaste in devanagari script-“I bow to you.”)
