But of course, postures (or asana in Sanskrit the language of yoga) are but a fraction of yoga. </font></P> <P><font size="2" face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">In fact an ancient sage, Patanjali famously described yoga as an eight limbed path& and postures are just one of the eight! What are the other seven? Well& .let s begin with the first limb, what a contemporary sage, Mukunda Stiles calls, Self-control for Social Harmony (yama) of which there are five& here s the first: non-violence (ahimsa). </font></P> <P><font size="2" face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">How do we practice non-violence? We begin at home. We begin watching our thoughts. Are we kind to ourselves in thoughts or do we constantly criticize ourselves? Do we have a  monkey on our shoulder shouting harsh words at ourselves to paraphrase writer Natalie Goldberg? </font></P> <P><font size="2" face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">A yoga suggestion for the week  how about watching and listening to the inner voice? I d run other half marathons but this was by far the most satisfying, partly of course because I raised over $2000 for research for victims of this grim disease. But it was also satisfying because I finished, which was in question. </font></P> <P><font size="2" face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">My right knee, injured a few weeks before the race, began to emanate deep pain about mile 7. I could have caught a ride back to the finish line (there were many offers) but I had the intuition, the knowing, that I would gain more from walking, well what turn into limping, to the end.</font></P> <P><font size="2" face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">And I did learn so much more. I learned what it is like to be at the end of the race and still be working as hard as I possibly can. I faced some of my personal demons alone in the desert and I remembered, re-learned how much I have and how incredibly lucky I am.</font></P> <P><font size="2" face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Thank you for the support you all give me and YogaNow everyday in so many ways.
